To Taoiseach Micheál Martin
The situation of Travellers in Ireland has been identified as a crisis, where many members of the Traveller community live in overcrowded conditions, unemployment is over 84%, life expectancy is 15 years less than in the majority settled community, infant morality is three times higher, and suicide is seven times higher than the settled population and accounts for 11% of all deaths in the Traveller community./p>
This combined with Institutionalised racism, exclusion, discrimination and a denial of human rights, and the lack of political will to address the stark inequalities that the Traveller community have endured for generations which have been identified in numerous reports compiled and published over the past five decades, has resulted in the crisis that the Traveller community experience today.
The Traveller community is no longer willing to accept this situation and call on you as leader of the Country to take immediate action to address this crisis and ensure that the Human Rights of Travellers be protected, respected and implemented without delay. The National Traveller Mental Health Network call for urgent meeting with you Taoiseach to discuss this crisis and look at ways in which this situation can addressed..
We look forward to hearing from you
