On Tuesday, the government stalled on signing the deal to gift Ireland's new €1bn National Maternity Hospital to a company which is legally bound by the ethos of the Religious Sisters of Charity.

I am writing to you as a voter in your constituency about the plan to gift our new  National Maternity Hospital to a private company St Vincents Holdings.
 
There are many reasons why this deal should not go ahead. Below I'll list my main concerns. 
 
- There are too many questions over the new governance structure for the new hospital. The Deputy Chairperson of the HSE board, Prof Deirdre Madden, is recorded as having ‘concerns regarding legal ownership of the site and building, and the governance and control of the proposed new maternity hospital
 
- The Government is seeking to hand over up to €1billion of public money to a private company, with absolutely zero scrutiny by members of the Dáil. Almost 70 TDs have signed a pledge for the new National Maternity Hospital to be in full public and state ownership. 
 
- Four years ago, we voted to give people of this country autonomy over their reproductive healthcare choices. Minister Donnelly assurances do nothing to assuage or allay concerns about religious interference in women's autonomy and agency to choose over their reproductive healthcare. The use of  'clinically appropriate' and 'legally permissible' will undermine people's right to choose. 
 
- The Government must answer questions as to why it is so hell-bent on building a public hospital on private, Vatican-owned land. There are ample reasons as to why this complicated and convoluted deal should not go ahead. -  Please ask the Minister of Health and the Government why a Vatican approved private company whose shareholders are committed to upholding Catholic, values have to own a new publicly funded maternity hospital? 
 
As your voter, I urge you to speak to you to speak up backing up your constituents who want a fully public and secular new National Maternity Hospital.
