You can email your Councillors now to call on them to do all they can to to put forward a CETA-Free Zone motion for their next local council? Together, we are mounting pressure from the council chambers to the Dáil chambers before the vote there. There's a template email you can use, but if you can, personalise it. Here are some writing tips below:

I am a constituent of yours and I’m writing today to strongly express my concern about the Council not looking at the local effects of the CETA trade deal on our community - this very much is a local issue.
 
I ask that you use your power as a local public representative to protect the environment, food quality, small businesses, for all of our sakes, by asking for a review to examine the effects of the CETA trade on our local democracy - our policies and plans from housing to climate and everything in between.
 
We already know that CETA will enable some of the world’s biggest corporations to undermine EU social, health and environmental standards - what does that mean for us locally? It will result in the loss of jobs in countries like Ireland and will severely affect the Irish food and agriculture sector. 
 
Our national sovereignty and democracy will be undermined by CETA if allowed to proceed. Under its investor protection rules, CETA will give Canadian firms unprecedented powers to sue the Irish government when any new laws affect their profits. We should be asking how this will affect us locally too. We do not want to reduce the social and environmental standards we hold dear.
 
Please don't dismiss this - it is a local issue that will have real affects on how our council works and our community. I am hoping that you will listen to my concerns and others in our community and take a lead by putting a motion forward to the council. 
 
This is the motion I am suggesting that you could be put forward
 
“The members agree that the Chief Executive should immediately obtain independent legal advice on whether, or not, the ratification of the remaining provisions of the agreement (in particular the Investor Court System provision) could have any direct or indirect financial or legal implications for  this Council's services, including any planned new services, restoration of previous services provided or implementation of National Climate Change legislation in the council.

This Council resolves to write to the Minister for Trade, the Minister for Local government and the Taoiseach to outline the outcome of such advice. It further resolves to publicise the council’s findings of the review and to circulate this motion with other Councils as correspondence for consideration.”
