Citizens across Europe want to sponsor refugees to offer them a safe home and a new life. We want the Commission to offer direct support to local groups that help refugees who are granted national visas. 2. No one should be prosecuted or fined for offering humanitarian help or shelter. We want the Commission to stop those governments that are punishing volunteers. 3. Everyone has the right to justice. We want the Commission to guarantee more effective ways and rules to defend all victims of labour exploitation and crime across Europe and all victims of human rights abuses at our borders.".

Why is this important?

No matter our differences, most of us want pretty similar things - to feel safe and to be with people who care about us. But the rules governing migration in Europe are making life very difficult for people moving to Europe - especially people who are escaping war and poverty.

Citizens of Europe who value and want to care for fellow human beings coming to live in Europe have their hands tied. We are horrified at the number of people dying in the waters and borders of Europe every week. [1]

Uplift members are working with partners across Europe to change the rules. [2] If one million people sign a European Citizens’ Initiative it would legally compel the EU to listen to our proposals. It could even lead directly to a change in the relevant EU migration law, which currently criminalises compassion. [3]

Notes

What exactly am I signing when I add my name to this European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI)?

When we collect one million signatures across Europe [8,250 in Ireland] the European Commission will be legally obliged to respond to the call for changes to our demands.

Why do I need to give so much information?

This is not a usual Uplift petition! An European Citizen Initiative petition is the official way for EU citizens to call on the European Commission to act. Because your signature carries more weight, they ask for a few more details to verify your identity. Uplift does not have access to any of your details on the official ECI form.
