Why is this important?
Everyone needs a safe, warm place to call home. But over 8,000 people, including almost 3,000 children remain trapped in emergency accommodation in Ireland with many more living in fear of losing their home, sleeping rough on our streets, and countless others are hidden homelessness and at risk.
But, the Government could end homelessness - if they build enough social and affordable housing. People urgently need safe, secure, affordable housing and support to remain in that housing. People in our communities are at risk of being left behind and becoming trapped in a cycle of homelessness and housing insecurity.
There’s a big opportunity for change on the table before the next budget is passed. Uplift is partnering with the Simon Community to demand the Government build more social and affordable housing. This must be a priority for Budget 2018.
The Simon Community are a hugely respected housing and homelessness charity, working directly with people experiencing homelessness. If Uplift members help build a massive people powered petition to combine their expertise with a massive show of public support for the campaign - it could be enough to force the Government into tackling homelessness at its source.
